I began looking at foods and asking, “is this GOOD for me?” “Will this help me?” I have read many books, many articles, listened to so many lectures, have taken classes, taught classes, researched and studied so many health issues because I know what it’s like to be sick and I know what it’s like to be well. I wanted to eat to live, rather than live to eat. I had always worked out diligently, but now I was working out for my well-being instead of for a cute figure. (My vitamin D blood level was 14 when diagnosed with breast cancer and I am at 84 presently).

I began to juice, take supplements, and work on my vitamin D level. I got great advice and was put on a wonderful new path from a local chiropractor.

#AWAKEN CHURCH SAN DIEGO HOW TO#
She states, “I set about trying to figure out more about cancer (and thyroid) and how to stay in remission. She wanted more time to raise her kids, to love her husband, and to teach others who were struggling with their health all she had learned. It became Karen’s passion to discover everything there was to know about food, nutrition, and healthy living. At that time, her kids were in kindergarten, 5th grade, and 7th grade. She began what she calls her “real health journey” as a middle-aged mama with a loving and supportive husband, and 3 awesome kids.

Her oncologist told her to start taking vitamin D3 and fish oil and to start exercising, but Karen knew there must be more out there to help her become happier and healthier. Her battle with breast cancer led her to start asking what she could do to ensure that the rest of her life would be healthier. We're excited to introduce you all to Karen Shackelford: mother, wife, three-time cancer survivor, and author of the informative blog “The Good Stuff Girl.” She’s had several wake-up calls throughout her life and believes she is a true miracle after surviving through a large fibroid tumor in her uterus at 21, Stage 3 breast cancer at 42, and a thyroid crash at 48. Her first LP to consist entirely of original songs and no covers, On My Side followed in 2017 faring similarly well on both the Christian and pop charts and prompting the release of a live concert album, On My Side, in early 2018. It reached the top half of the Billboard 200. The Smiths put out a collaborative effort later that year with the folkier Home, and in 2014 Walker-Smith presented her first seasonal album, When Christmas Comes. She made her recording debut in 2006 on the first Jesus Culture Music release Everything, then two years later her solo album Here Is My Song appeared under the name Kim Walker.įurther Jesus Culture releases and her marriage to photographer Skyler Smith kept her from returning to her solo career until the 2013 live album Still Believe arrived as a Kim Walker-Smith release. It was there that she began attending the Bethel Church, where she later became worship leader, and in 1999, the church launched its Jesus Culture ministry. Born in Albany, Oregon, the future singer, songwriter, and worship leader moved to Redding, California to attend college.

While she maintains a solo career, Kim Walker-Smith is also a member of the Jesus Culture band and youth outreach ministry.
